World Animal Day

3rd Oct 2024

Here at New Forest Wildlife Park we understand the significance of World Animal Day on October 4th, emphasising the importance of wildlife welfare.

As well as being a place for people to get closer to wildlife, with nearly 30 species of animal in mature ancient woodland, many of our species are endangered and we aim to help their survival.

We actively participate in breeding and conservation programmes, partnering with the community and other wildlife organisations to make a positive impact.

Conservation is key

Here are some of our conservation highlights from 2024 so far:

  • Giant River Otters are critically endangered. Our dad, Simuni, is the oldest giant otter to have sired young in Europe and he lives with his cubs at the park.
  • We welcomed 5 critically endangered Scottish Wildcats who had purpose built enclosures, specific to their needs.
  • Our European mouflon extended their herd with the birth of five lambs in April strengthening this rare species' presence in the UK. We're one of only two collections nationwide that display this species, making us key to their conservation and public awareness.
  • The park plays a crucial role in Eurasian otter conservation by our curator of collections, Jason,  managing UK studbooks, which contain historical records dating back to 1828. This helps ensure the survival and understanding of otter populations in the UK and beyond.
  • The park plays a crucial role in asian short-clawed otters conservation too! Jason runs the European and Global studbook for this incredible species, which has allowed us to vastly improve the captive management of the species and conserve their important genetic diversity and population for the future.
  • We hosted the ABWAK Otter Keepers' Workshop for the 3rd time. Many topics were spoken about, from nutrition, enrichment, conservation to the illegal pet trade and public perception of otters. It was a brilliant day for zoo professionals to expand their knowledge and for us all to work towards more improvements in otter care and conservation.

#ShareSavvy campaign

Help protect animals with #ShareSavvy! Our sister park's campaign, Battersea Park Children’s Zoo, is raising awareness about the dangers of irresponsible social media use. Learn how to share animal content responsibly, support animal welfare and help fight the illegal wildlife trade.

Come explore the New Forest Wildlife Park, meet incredible animals and learn about conservation. Every visit makes a difference.
