The New Forest Wildlife Park sadly announces the passing of our grey wolves

7th Oct 2024

The New Forest Wildlife Park sadly announces the passing of our remaining two grey wolves, Chaser and Aspen.

The sibling pack arrived at the park in 2010 as 7-month-old cubs. Chaser, Rocky, Cedar, Aspen, and Idaho quickly became very popular with both visitors and staff, often brightening the early mornings with their iconic howling.

Over the past 13.5 years, we have watched them grow into their roles within the pack, each with their own unique personality. Rocky, always eager to roll in any scent he could find; Chaser, the mischievous brother, forever trying to steal Aspen's hidden treasures; Idaho and Cedar, the quieter sisters, content to bask in the sun together on the higher ground of their forest enclosure.

However, over the past year, the aging wolves have faced multiple age-related health conditions leading to Cedar, Idaho and Rocky passing away.

Recently, Chaser's health took a significant turn. One of our greatest concerns was the emotional distress Aspen would face if left alone. Wolves are a highly complex species that thrive on companionship and strength of relationship in a pair or pack. After much observation, careful discussion, and consultations with our Veterinary specialist, we made the incredibly difficult but kindest decision to humanely put both elderly wolves to sleep together.

For our keeper team, it has been an absolute privilege to care for our wolf pack, they will be very much missed by all our staff and the public, with whom, we know they had become very firm favourites.
