A sad farewell to Panambi

10th Dec 2025

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Panambi, our oldest giant otter and cherished matriarch, at the remarkable age of 18.

Born in 2007, Panambi travelled from Germany to the UK in 2008 to join us at our first park, the Chestnut Centre. It was there that she began an extraordinary legacy, becoming a leading figure in the UK’s contribution to the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for giant otters. Panambi raised two successful litters, four cubs in total, before retiring from breeding and moving with us to the New Forest Wildlife Park alongside her daughter, Meamu.

Since then, Panambi and Meamu have captured the hearts of visitors and keepers alike. Whether they were greeting guests at the front of the park, lounging on their favorite sunbathing platform, or snuggled up in their indoor space, their bond and presence always brought joy. Panambi’s legacy proudly continues through her eldest son, Simuni, who has fathered seven cubs and carries her lineage forward.

We are deeply grateful for the kindness and support shown during this time. Panambi will remain in the hearts of our team and all who had the privilege of seeing her over the years.
