Go Otter-Crazy This May Half Term at New Forest Wildlife Park- the only UK site where families can see four otter species

21st May 2026

New Forest Wildlife Park is going otter-mad this May half term, with a week-long celebration of these charismatic animals and the conservation challenges they face.

Running from Saturday 23rd to Sunday 31st May, 'A Whole Lot of Otter Week' offers families the chance to meet four different otter species in one place which is something no other park in the UK can offer.

The wildlife park is home to the largest collection of giant otters in Europe and the largest collection of smooth-coated otters in the UK, including the country's current only successful breeding pair, who welcomed two cubs in December.

The week's highlight falls on Wednesday, 27th May, which is World Otter Day. Keepers will be found at the various otter enclosures throughout the day to chat with visitors, share fascinating facts, and answer questions about these charismatic animals.

On this special day, the park will also highlight the #ShareSavvy campaign, teaching families how simple online choices can protect wild otters from exploitation and the illegal pet trade.

There will also be ‘A Whole Lot of Otter’ activities throughout the week including a Pawprint trail and quiz. Follow hidden otter pawprints around the park, test your otter knowledge, and win a prize. A brilliant way to explore while learning about otter conservation (additional £3).

On selected days, visitors can book encounters and watch otters enjoying hose play, a rare chance for close-up experience with these playful animals. Availability on the day, visitors are encouraged to ask on arrival and extra charges apply.

Drop into the park's activity cabin for otter-themed colouring and puzzles – perfect for younger children.

Throughout the week, the park is running additional daily talks packed with otter facts, behaviours, and conservation stories.

"Each species has its own personality and behaviours," says Elizabeth Mcnamara. "Giant otters are the loudest, they're incredibly chatty. Smooth-coated otters are brilliant swimmers and incredibly family-oriented. Asian small-clawed otters use their paws almost like hands. And our Eurasian otter is solitary and pretty elusive."

New Forest Wildlife Park is open daily throughout May half term (23rd–31st May).

The park is home to over 260 animals representing over 30 species, with adventure playgrounds, plenty of picnic benches and café on site.
